Faisalabad: In a competitive society or in a capitalistic country like ours advertisements are a necessity. Factories mass-produce goods and shops and firms sell them. The advertisement of these goods in meant to attract a wide variety of customers to buy them. The production of goods without quick sale is to no purpose.

We have different kinds of advertisement to promote sales. Advertisements that gives information about new products about health and safety is called informative advertising. Informative advertising informs consumers about the range of goods and services available to them.

The kind of advertising that persuades people to buy things (makes them buy things by giving good reasons) is called persuasive advertising. Persuasive advertising is directed at customers who do not need to buy products very much. However, through effective advertising they are brought round to buy them better than they are. When customers buy the products, they realize the deception played upon them., which makes the products unpopular. When persuasive the products unpopular. When persuasive advertising becomes deceptive, the results are often negative.

We look at the innumerable posters, notices, small boards and hoardings (called billboards in American English), huge boards on the outside of building, and banners for the advertisement at road seem to add glamour to the area around. However, the large hoardings or billboard with pictures and sale slogans only block the view of natural scenery and restrict openness. They interfere with driving roadside is the cost of citizen’s peace of mind and social safety.

In any case, advertisements are something of a necessity in the modern world of competition and conflicts. They introduce the new products to the general public for example, the public came to know readily of some new medicines for diseases, effective techniques of constructing houses through companies have specialized knowledge, availability of new methods of teaching and unusual education arrangements, new and useful fertilizers and equipment for agriculture production; and so on.

The government advertises its schemes and policies to inform the public and to make it participate in them. It has advertised in the past it new housing plans, saving schemes, educational policies, issuance of identity card, etc. off and one.

Advertisements in newspapers for job in government department and private organization are highly useful. They help the office and agencies to get readily trained manpower from the public. They help the educated public to get jobs and employment. The labour force gets work in government officers, market places and production centers through newspaper advertisements.

The advertisements of cigarettes, undesirable dress, expensive foods, harmful soft drinks and time-wasting games should be discouraged. Cosmetics and items of make-up that cause waste of money and negative effects on the health should not be put up at public places.

The advertisers who misinform the public about their products and services and about those of their competitors should be tried in courts of law for this, which should be strict laws for this, which should be carefully and forcefully implemented.

The visual or color pollution caused by the numerous pictures, signs, slogans and writing on billboards (hoardings) should immediately be checked. In the big cities, all spaces around the main roads and public parks are clogged with (blocked by) these most of which are a kind of nuisance. They take away the atmospheric openness and charm of the skyline — the skyline which, in fact, promotes health and vision.
